From the after basics grid:

234 XY wing in c45 removes <4> from r1c5,
also remove <3> from r6c4 as then r9c4=2, r1c3=2, r2c4=2 leads to r9c4 = 3

more basics (to fill in the <3> ...

r4c7 <> 3

as then r4c9=6, r8c9=4, r3c7=4, r3c1=2, r6c1=3 leads to no 3's in box 5

I agree, this is a very good looking contradiction

It stems from the pattern of 8's in box 8

First, just give the two <68> pairs in r1 and c1 names, say a and b (not really needed but make ...

You know my methods, Mogulmeister.

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?

Well Gianni, when I look for a solution one way I do it is to look at the whole of the puzzle to find patterns to help me solve.

Sometimes you need several of these patterns to combine to find the ...

r3c7 <> 8 as then r1c3=8 and r2c5=8 leaving no <8> in row 5

There is a <68> in r1 and c1, so r1c1<>6 as then no <8> in box 8

I think I was on the same lines as you Mogulmeister, but saw it differently

If r8c4=8 then r7c2=7 leaves no space for a <7> in box 8

Yes the not 9 in r2c1 has a better symmetry

//1-<69>
9
\\2-<49>

r1c3 <> 1

As then r2c1=9, r2c7=2 which gives in row 1 <69> and <49> pairs and no room for a <2>

Or you could treat it like a sort of W wing giving no <9> in box 3

What if you don't use the ANP and say if r3c6=1, r2c6=2, r2c1=5, r2c7=6 and then r3c7 is back to 1

(Which is how I saw it the first time, before I noticed the W wing similarity)

Another way to look at this contradiction is to travel in a different direction

If r7c5=2 then r89c1=2, r5c1=4, r5c5=8 and no place for a 4 in c5

At this point in the puzzle the 478 XY wing reveals itself

+-------------+--------------+-------------+
| 8 1 7 | 9 6 23 | 4 5 23 |
| 46 34 356 | 3578 278 238 | 1 9 23 |

Or you could have r8c5 <> 4

As then in row 8 you would get <37> pair, r7c9=5, r7c5=6 leads to two 9's in box 2
