This is a Fiendish Sudoku from last week. I'll post it now, I have a question for later.

First, this is a pretty puzzle with those parallel diagonal lines. Laughing

This puzzle moved along pretty smoothly. Somewhere early, there were two Type 3 rectangles with the ab-ab part in common, which you probably could have done something with, but I didn't try.

An XY-Wing, followed by an X-Wing, did the trick. There was a Type 4, which soon turned into a Type 1, but wasn't needed because basic moves were still available.

I'll be interested to see what sort of fishy discussion ensues.

I didn't need to rely on any "UR"s, or on the XY-Wing -- one X-Wing (on "9"s) was enough to crack it. dcb

I have no idea if I needed to rely on the XY-Wing. It seems that the techniques used to solve puzzles are a result of, in large part, the sequence in which we look for them. Often I just plain forget to look for XY-Wings, but that was not the case here, so I used it when I found it.

This was followed by the same X-Wing you used on "9" and, chances are, had I not found or used the XY-Wing, the X-Wing would have solved it for me too.

I've been playing with the super hard puzzles at the brainbashers.com website and found this an interesting puzzle. WIth all the 9's present after several reductions, the x wing was a bit difficult to spot, but it fell apart right away.
