Let's try my hand at eureka!

(5=9)a-(9=1)b-(1=2)c-(29=4)d-(4=9)e-(9=5)a so a <> 9 to solve

Or go backwards

(5=9)a-(9=4)e-(49=2)d-(2=1)c-(1=9)b-(9=5)a

Looking again at my grid, whatever you put in d <249> still shows that a cannot be <9>

Well done with the Eureka, Tom.

Also the ANP with d and e (using Tom's grid and lettering)
Code:

                        d     c     b     a
If ANP is false then (49=2)-(2=1)-(1=9)-(9=5) and a < > 9
                         d+e     a
If ANP is true then  (2=49|49)-(9=5) and a < > 9

Nice going Tom! Once you get used to Eureka it's not so bad. I have to admit though the first time that I saw it I absolutely hated it!! Whoever came up with it obviously had no background in logic (deductive, symbolic, mathematical, or other). If they had, they never would have adopted such a horrible notation!
